Carter Lifts Uranium Sales Ban At Summit

The Carter administration will resume enriched uranium sales to West Germany Canada Japan Belgium the Netherlands and a multinational energy operation involving West Germany and France. The move aims to boost U S reliability as a nuclear fuel supplier while signaling peaceful use. officials stress reprocessing could create weapons and Congress has yet to approve broader authority. Botha says Young may visit SA if proper diplomacy used

South Africa's Foreign Minister Botha warned U S Ambassador Andrew Young to mind his manners or risk being barred from the country. The State Department said Young would proceed with plans to visit Johannesburg and meet students and businessmen despite possible meetings with black leaders in Soweto.

Expansion Planned for Gallo Wash Coal Mine in 1980s

Gallo Wash Coal Co. to mine 1.8 million tons of San Juan Basin coal in Gallo Wash near Farmington, starting as early as 1985, with production running through 2025. TG&E will use the coal for a new Springerville plant, creating about 350 jobs, under a 4 year royalty deal totaling at least $600 million based on $4.50 per ton.

New Mexico Proclaims National Transportation Week 1977

Governor Jerry Apodaca proclaims May 15 21 1977 as National Transportation Week in New Mexico. The highway department plans open houses equipment displays and tours at main office and district sites to educate the public about the state road program under the AASHTO Traffic Clubs International banner.

Sambo Fire Remains Unsolved in Roswell

In Roswell, the Sambo's Restaurant roof fire Friday night remains unexplained with no damage estimate given. Firefighters reported smoke from 1 p.m. and a blaze prompting a 6:30 p.m. call as roofers had checked earlier. Workers noted three minor flasblestones on the roof during suppression.

Hanover Mutual seeks groundwater permit in Mimbres Valley

On April 6 1977 Hanover Mutual Domestic Water Consumers Association filed permit application M 4393 with the State Engineer to appropriate 64.5 acre feet per year of shallow groundwater from the Mimbres Valley Underground Water Basin using an existing 789 foot well in Section 36 Township 16 South Range 12 West NM. The water is for domestic use in Hanover Fierro area. Public protest in writing is allowed within ten days after the last publication, addressed to Reynolds State Engineer, with triplicate copies and a filing fee.
