AP reports a nationwide truckers strike would disrupt nearly every element of the economy affecting the freight industry, farmers, businesses, and the U.S. Postal Service, signaling major potential damage to commerce and trade nationwide.
The House considers a bill to repeal the Hatch Act ban on partisan activity by federal workers and restore the Federal Election Commission’s ability to fund presidential campaigns. Administration opposition and a possible presidential veto loom as Congress weighs differences between House and Senate versions.
About 150000 Texans mostly Mexican Americans face job losses over the next decade due to farm mechanization. A Southwest Regional discussion notes a typical migrant worker is male, married, about 45 with limited schooling and a large family, earning about 28 weeks annually.
Mary Bray of Cobre High School spoke to the Silver City Kiwanis Club on Cooperative Office Education a joint school and employer program. She described student eligibility from ninth to eleventh grade, required courses, and the need for on the job training with 15 to 20 hours weekly work, transport, and a trainee wage at 75 percent of minimum wage.
Ernes tine C Wheaton Smith 87 died last Saturday at Hillcrest General Hospital. A Denver native she lived in Grant County 25 years. Survived by son Craig Wheaton Smith Dorset VT daughter Barbara Wheaton Smith Sherman DM two grandchildren three great grandchildren Cremation with memorial service Thursday at 4 PM Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd Contributions to Grant County Humane Society in lieu of flowers.
Rogers C. Morton is named Ford campaign manager and moves to a new office in Washington, remaining the central spokesman and contact for fundraising and delegates as the campaign keeps its focus on supporting President Ford for a full term. He succeeds Howard Callaway, who resigns amid probe concerns and defends his innocence while awaiting Justice Department findings. Callaway leaves with statements of no wrongdoing and calls for a speedy inquiry, hoping for exoneration.
