President Ford heads to California as the Republican presidential primary nears in 10 weeks while Democratic contenders concentrate on immediate voting. The Associated Press reports a heated campaign season with state stops and rival messaging shaping the race.
Santa Fe AP report says Dona Ana County day care program will be managed by a private Las Cruces group within two weeks. State officials note staff limits and prioritization in budget constrained county offices. program funded by Title 20 with 75 percent federal support and 25 percent state match. 150 eligible children, mostly AFDC mothers, will continue to receive services under new administration.
Washington AP reports two Albuquerque seniors Anne E Martin and Patrick W Cunningham were accepted to the U S Air Force Academy. Senator Domenici announced the nominations last fall. Martin is the first New Mexico woman accepted to the Academy and is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert E Martin. Cunningham is the son of Mrs Ruth Cunningham of Albuquerque.
The Cobre Consolidated Schools Board rehired all principals and assistant principals led by Superintendent David L. Walker. Named are Ernest Parra Central Elementary Jane Gray Bayard Elementary Jimmy Ponce Hurley Elementary Elsie Reman San Lorenzo Elementary Rex Dempsey C C Snell Junior High Frank D Lopez Cobre High School Anthony Romers and Sam Tapia. The board discussed tennis court resurfacing costs about 4000 per court and land transfer to Hurley.
Twenty four Spanish speaking congregations from a five state area prepare to attend a weekend convention in Albuquerque. Two thousand five hundred delegates are expected. The April 10 and 11 event titled Doors of the Word aims to teach Jesus Christ disciple making and faithful living. Marcos Garcia of the Bayard Congregation describes the program including discourses dramatizations and panel discussions to help cope with worldly pressures and maintain active faith. A Sunday address Are You Doing What God Requires of You? is set for 2 p.m. at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium.
Harri son H. Jack Schmitt campaigns across 16 000 miles visiting all 32 counties in New Mexico. He stresses jobs growth and personal responsibility while highlighting land water use energy and education as key issues before a Republican primary.
