Three juveniles age 14 and 15 were arrested at 11:26 p.m. Friday in Silver City for two vandalism incidents at the old Silver High School. They were handed to juvenile authorities. One entrance through a cafeteria window caused minor damage as they appeared to start fires but did not spread.
In New Mexico the Lt. Gov. Mondragon contemplates a U.S. Senate bid as Sen. Edward Kennedy's possible endorsement looms. Campaign talk centers on racejumping rumors involving Atty. Gen. Norvell and State Sen. Allard, with other candidates like Montoya and Morris weighing in.
Harry Gunderson, longtime American Legion member and bugler for countless services, receives a life membership for four decades of service. He helped establish Taps at Arlington on Memorial Day and moved to New Mexico in 1959, residing in Gila with his wife Pearl.
Phelps Dodge Corp will build a 10 million dollar smelter in eastern Hidalgo County to treat Tyrone mine production, expanding Tyrone output to 1,400 tons daily and creating about 300 jobs with a 4 million dollar annual payroll. The Metcalf mine near Morenci will also be developed as Tyrone expands.
Capt Barrios of the Silver City Police Force died Sunday after a lingering illness at Hillcrest General Hospital. A 15 year veteran captain and 12 year assistant chief, he was born in Silver City and a Western New Mexico University graduate. Navy veteran from the Korean conflict, he belonged to Lulac and the Fraternal Order of Police. Survived by widow Cecilia, four children Susan Cynthia Joe Gilbert, mother Estephana, three sisters, and many relatives. Rosary Tuesday night at Curtis-Bright, funeral Wednesday at St. Vincent de Paul with Fr Milano. Interment in Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers named. donations encouraged to Lulac Council 8004 Scholarship Fund.

Senate committee plans to question her about a memorandum tying ITT settlement of a Justice Department antitrust suit to a $400,000 pledge to the Republican National Convention.
