Scientists Discover New Elements in Florida Find

Florida State University researchers report discovery of three and possibly six new natural elements using a particle accelerator. The elements would be super heavy, heavier than uranium, with initial findings announced by Dr. Thomas Cahill and later supported by X ray photographs from Dr. J William Nelson. Further verification is expected before confirmation.

Supreme Court Backs Right To Silence In Custody

The Supreme Court rules 6 to 3 that suspects in police custody may remain silent without it harming their testimony. In a separate decision, 7 to 2, defendants must be told all elements of the charged crime before a guilty plea is valid. The cases involve Ada Francisco’s murder and Timothy Morgan’s plea. Other rulings include animal protection on public lands, teacher firings after hearings, and presidential powers on oil import fees.

Elizabeth May Gillespie obituary in Silver City

Elizabeth May Gillespie age 58 died Wednesday at William Beaumont Army Medical Center El Paso after illness. Lifelong Silver City resident she worked as bookkeeper at local drugstores and clinic. Survived by husband Robert, daughter Shirley Eck, two grandchildren, mother Sarah Salara, sister and five brothers. Funeral Saturday 4 pm Curtis Bright Funeral Chapel with Eastern Star officiating. Interment in Masonic Cemetery. pallbearers and honorary pallbearers named.

Firefighters Battle Jemez Blaze Near Santa Fe National Forest

About 800 firefighters held an 5500 acre blaze in the Santa Fe National Forest near Jemez Springs. The fire, likely man caused, remained 80 percent contained at night with hotspots along the main perimeter. Evacuations occurred at Hummingbird Music Camp. camps near Battleship Rock discussed possible evacuations.

Guaranteed Income Project Working In Seattle

Seattle welfare and middle to low income families join a 20 million study evaluating guaranteed annual income or negative income tax. About 20 percent of participants were on welfare. payments range 3600 to 5400 yearly for a family of four, for three or five years. Early data show no clear drop in labor force participation, with slight reductions in hours worked. A Denver study mirrors Seattle’s questions on labor supply and family dynamics as results remain inconclusive.

Federal Aid Sought To Stop Caterpillars

HAGERMAN AP Bill Langenegger president of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau urged federal aid to fight the range caterpillar across seven and a half million acres in northeastern New Mexico and spreading toward Texas Oklahoma and Colorado He pressed emergency legislation to fund spraying programs via APHIS include treatment of federal lands and sought national research funds as a permanent solution noting state efforts have failed.
