Helitack crews and smokejumpers battled 15 fires in Gila National Forest from a Sunday lightning storm. Fourteen fires were lightning caused, one campers campfire blamed for another blaze. Observers found all fires manned and under control as scattered rain cooled conditions but drought danger remained extreme.

Silver City Fire Department answered two alarms over the weekend. A trash fire near Swan and Broadway was extinguished at 1 pm Saturday with no damage reported. A vacant house at 713 South Texas burned, 45 minutes to extinguish, extensive smoke and fire damage to Angel Soto’s property.

Abby strengthens to hurricane near Tampa Bay
Tropical storm Abby became a hurricane just before noon and aimed at west Florida. Forecaster Neil Frank said the storm had top winds of 75 mph in gusts and should reach the Tampa Bay area by late afternoon. At noon Abby centered about 170 miles south-southwest of Tampa and moving north at 15 mph.

Job Corps Recruiting Program Slated For Grant County Area
Job Corpsmen from Luna Grants Mountainair Eight Canyon and Alpine Arizona will recruit New Mexico youth starting June 10 in San Miguel County with a tentative June 17 start for other areas. Three corpsmen and a staff member form each team to contact youths door to door in remote towns. The 149 quota aims to open opportunities for ages 16 to 21. Since February 1965 over 1600 young men and 141 young women have entered day Corps. Of 649 who returned to the state, 421 or 65 percent have been placed in jobs reentered school or joined the military. Efforts now seek jobs for 72 returnees. New Mexico led the Southwest in 1967 Job Corps recruiting.
