School Bus Safety Institute Names Instructors Consultants

The 30th annual School Bus Drive at Western New Mexico University in August will feature 18 subject areas with instructors and consultants. About 700 drivers from across the state are expected to attend the five day salon. National consultant J Fishery and institute director Loshbough lead the program with a lineup of education and safety experts from public schools, police, and transportation agencies.

NMSU Announces Late Student Policy for New Arrivals

New Mexico State University declares a late student policy. Admissions Director R W Shipe says all new freshmen and transfer students admitted after Wednesday August 18 are late. Late registrants receive a special orientation August 30 and register that afternoon. ACT testing for freshmen ends August 24. Regular orientation and registration run August 24 25.

Local artists win awards in Carlsbad show

Winners from Silver City in the Eighth Annual Tri-State Arts and Crafts Exhibit sponsored by the Carlsbad Area Art Association. Marilyn Howard won Second Prize for her macrame hanging Yellow Fetish. Cecil Howard received Honorary Mention for his batik hanging House God. J udged by Sam Smith of the University of New Mexico. Open July 25 through August 1 at the Carlsbad Public Library Annex.

Steve Gonzales Named to Dean's Honor List at NMSU

Steve Gonzales of 125 Daniel St Silver City and Mrs Wilson has been named to the Dean's Honor List of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences at New Mexico State University for the spring semester. He majors in mathematics and plans to register for his senior year. He earned a 2.8 GPA, placing among the top 20 percent of arts and sciences students.

Miller Receives Scout Leadership Training at Philmont

Miller son of Mr and Mrs Robert F Miller is among over 800 scouts chosen nationwide for a 12 day Junior Leader Instructor Training Camp at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The program teaches patrol and troop planning hike and campfire training with nightly tent living and rotating patrol duties. The Boy Scouts of America conducts the broader program at Philmont, hosting more than 15,100 scouts and leaders plus 1,500 volunteer scouters and 6,000 family members each summer.
