Art Guild Sponsors Michener Painting Workshop
Lis Cruces artist James H. Michener will lead a painting workshop July 76 through August 1 at the Pinos Altos Church Art Gallery. Sponsored by the Grant County Art Guild and funded by the New Mexico Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, the event offers day and evening classes for beginners and advanced artists. A critique session for participants will be held Sunday, August 1.

Comstar Launches Satellite Network For US Calls
Comstar I heads toward a stationary orbit 22 300 miles above the Pacific to meet rising domestic telephone demand. The Atlas Centaur rocket lifted it Thursday and an onboard motor will place it in final position by late August. Comstar along with a sister unit, launched May 13, forms an 185 million system owned by Comsat General Corp with AT&T leasing at 15 million per satellite. A third satellite is due in 1978. AT&T and GTE Satellite will use the system to handle calls across the 48 states plus Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Projections show interstate calls averaging 24 million daily by 1980. Austria became a republic in 1918 after Emperor Charles I abdicated.

Prosecution to reindict two on tax evasion charges
Federal prosecutors will seek to reindict Joseph Palumbo and Jo Anne Anderson on income tax evasion counts. The charges were dismissed on technical grounds from an SBA corruption probe in Virginia. A new Western District grand jury will hear the reinstated case with Palumbo, Anderson, and Regan connected to the scheme that forged corporations to obtain SBA loans.

UNM Receives $1 Million Cancer Research Grant
The National Cancer Institute awards UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center $1,069,572 in year three of a continuing grant to support clinical trials of pion radiation therapy. The work is conducted with Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory at its Clinton P. Anderson Meson Facility in Los Alamos. The center has already received over $2.3 million in the first two years.

Howe Defense Rests In Utah Sex Trial
The defense rested without calling witnesses as closing arguments began in Rep. Allan Howe's misdemeanor sex trial in Salt Lake City. Decoy prostitutes testified that Howe approached them and offered $20 for sex, with Howe’s wife present in court.
