Fatal airliner crash rocks Hendersonville area
The Piedmont Airlines Boeing 727 carrying 74 passengers and five crew collided with a small Cessna 310 over western North Carolina near Hendersonville. All aboard both aircraft perished. The pilot of the private plane, John T. McNaughton, soon to be secretary of the Navy, his wife and their son were among the dead. Investigators recovered recorders and flight data, while witnesses described a sudden, explosive impact and debris scattered over Camp Pinewood and nearby terrain. The airliner had departed Atlanta en route to Washington with an estimated arrival later.
