Senate expected to back Carter B1 bomber decision

The Senate is expected to strike all B1 bomber funding from a $114.4 billion defense bill this week, while the House weighs an agriculture bill with veto risk and work on a voting reform plan. Carter halted B1 production two weeks ago, replacing it with modified BS2s carrying cruise missiles. The defense bill also faces a strip mining reclamation measure and the voting reform would allow same day registration with federal aid to states. Meanwhile obituaries note Cody Lindley aged 16 of Silver City, a Silver High student, died Sunday. services set for Tuesday at Curtis-Bright Funeral Chapel.

Coalition Forms to Oppose New Mexico Nuclear Waste Sites

A five group coalition launches a petition drive across New Mexico to halt planned defense related nuclear waste dumps at Carlsbad salt beds and northeast Cimarron near the state line. Groups include Southwest Research and Information Center and Citizens Against Nuclear Threats with others in Albuquerque Santa Fe and Las Vegas. A Moratorium Inc. letter of support is reported though no Moratorium members attended.

Martinez Seeks Post as State Treasurer Candidate

Las Vegas businessman Sammy Martinez, 49, seeks the Democratic nomination for state treasurer. He has 12 years on San Miguel County and state Democratic central committees and led the county Young Democrats. Martinez has never held elective office but ran for the state House about 12 years ago, announcing his candidacy Saturday.
