Soap Box Derby Elimination Contest In El Paso
The 28th All American Soap Box Derby elimination event sponsored by Chevrolet GM and local Optimist Clubs will kick off with a parade in El Paso Texas Saturday. Local entrants Bill Emerson and Wiley Connell will compete in the West Texas New Mexico district along with 78 others, each building their own racer and receiving sponsorships for equipment. After a parade the cars will be inspected for safety, then a trial run followed by adjustments before Sunday’s final runs. The district winner earns a $500 savings bond and a trip to Akron to compete for nine college scholarships. a banquet for entrants completes the weekend activities.

Rains Lessen Danger Of Forrest Fires In Gila Forest
Rain may end the season of extreme forest fire danger in the Gila National Forest. If rain continues two to three days, fires drop to almost none. otherwise fires persist. A small fire between West Fork Gila River and Lookout Canyon was fought by helicopter or parachute crews. Twenty fires were controlled yesterday, with 226 since Jan 1, including three man caused and two lightning caused.

A team of engineers and geologists from the U S Bureau of Reclamation concluded that the Hooker Dam site shows suitable geology for the foundation though further testing is needed.
