Five Marines Die In Fights Near Da Nang

Five U S Marines were killed and 17 wounded in two booby engagements near Da Nang. U S military spokesman said 22 Viet Cong were killed in one action and unconfirmed reports spoke of 26 killed in the other. The biggest fight involved Marines near Ta Nang with about 200 Viet Cong reported earlier. Air support included two F4B Phantoms aiding foot soldiers through rice paddies and hamlets.

Navy destroyer Ricketts refutes doubts on mixed nationality crew

Norfolk based destroyer Claude V. Ricketts returned from a five month Mediterranean cruise with a 300 crew from six NATO nations. Cmdr. Thomas E. Fortson praised smooth operations and morale, noting Soviet interest during the voyage and confident belief that mixed Manning is militarily feasible.

Mrs Luz Jacquez Dies Longtime Bayard Resident

Luz A Jacques, 32, had lived in Bayard for 46 years and died at her home this morning. Survived by daughter Mrs Juan Candelaria of Bayard, two grandsons, two granddaughters, sisters Mrs Trinidad Castro of yard and Mrs Petra Moreno of Santa Rita. Funeral arrangements announced tomorrow by the Curtis Mortuary of Silver City.

Weather Preview With Scattered Showers Expected

Weather summary notes partly cloudy skies with showers possible. Highs reaching 92 to 97 degrees today and Wednesday, with lows near 60s to mid 40s. 24 hour report shows a high of 89 and low of 60 with .49 inches of precipitation. Airport data reports a high of 92 and a low of 62 with no precipitation and limited sound readings.

U S Treasury Agent Dies After Collision

A U S Treasury agent assigned to Albuquerque died in El Cajon after a traffic accident a week earlier. Richard F. LeFors, of the alcohol tax division, died at Grossmont Hospital with officials confirming the cause from injuries sustained in the two vehicle crash.

Rain Helps Gila Forest Fire Fight Says Salars

Scattered showers ease fire danger in Gila National Forest. Calvin Salars of the U S Forest Service Fire Control Center in Silver City says conditions look better. Fires reported yesterday were 2 percent of total, 12 today with about 115 men fighting. All fires started by lightning. Fourteen smoke jumpers from Missoula and 35 organized crews from Mountain Air joined the effort. Most men transported by helicopter. Since Jan 1 there have been 173 forest fires in the Gila National Forest. three were man caused, the rest by lightning.

Peking warned the United States via its People's Daily and Radio Peking that China is ready for battle after alleged U S air intrusions over Hok on in Yunnan near Hanoi and bombing of La Cai. The army vowed retaliation if attacked, saying it will act with utmost indignation.

Fort Worth man bids top price for Socorro land lease

A Fort Worth, Texas man J C Pace offered 10100 as a bonus bid to the State Land Office on Monday to lease 117 acres six miles southwest of Socorro. Pace previously held a lease on the area which contains an old manganese mine but the term expired after ten years due to nonproduction.
