State education leaders urge a basic skills emphasis for high school diplomas to ensure reading writing and arithmetic proficiency. The plan aims to motivate students and hold schools accountable while preserving local control and reducing humiliation for graduates unable to meet certain objectives.
The Associated Press reports two more deaths from separate crashes. An elderly Lubbock Texas man, Mack Jay Wilson, 80, died after his pickup was struck by a train near Melrose. John Mark Thompson, 18, of Farmington, died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle collision.
Ned Warren Sr a 63 year old convicted extortionist faced 16 new felony counts of conspiracy and securities fraud in Scottsdale Arizona Police said the case ties to the defunct Equitable Mortgage Co and Mescal Development Co Warren appeared pale with an oxygen tank and was released on 25000 bond He remains under a broad plea bargaining scrutiny and faces possible 15 years behind bars if convicted on all counts The case stems from a county wide investigation into real property securities fraud with indictments naming Warren and about 22 others including a neighbor linked to selling securities tied to mortgage schemes and land deals. Warren has a prior Seattle extortion conviction and is under further state and federal scrutiny over plea agreements and possible public official involvement in the frauds. The next arraignment was set for July 8 in Pina County Superior Court.
In Tucson based discovery the remains of a star believed to have exploded 300000 years ago remain hurtling through space at extreme speeds. Kitt Peak Observatory researchers Gull Kirshner and Parke report the finding from a survey of supernova remnants. The team notes a star can shed up to ten percent of its matter in a supernova and far less in a nova.
AP reports a boiler explosion at the San Juan generating plant will push Public Service Co of New Mexico rates up by as much as 15 percent while repairs on the 24 story No 2 boiler are delayed. The firm must buy replacement power, estimated four to six times more costly, and officials warn of potential issues if another utility encounters trouble. Insurance investigators examine the blast.
