A San Francisco grand jury charged ten people including former U.S. attorney Richard L. McVeigh and Alaska airline executive Alexander Miller in a seven count indictment. They allegedly conspired to bring prostitution and gambling to work camps along the trans Alaska pipeline from Northern California to Valdez and planned to net up to 1 million dollars in six months. The probe spanned San Francisco Las Vegas Valdez Anchorage and involved FBI undercover work. Also named was Miami figure Charles The Blade Tourine a Cosa Nostra link. An attorney for the defendants said they will plead not guilty.
The National Portrait Gallery reports the presentation of a 1896 portrait of Sarah Porter by Robert B. Brandegee. Porter founded Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Connecticut, and was a pioneer in advancing secondary education for young women in the United States.
The Village of Bayard New Mexico adopts Ordinance No 176 to establish municipal garbage collection and disposal, regulate containment and storage, prohibit open burning, set container and collection rules, define rates, and provide penalties.
