Cherapee Drive Is Supported By Mayor Cain

A formal proclamation by Silver City Mayor Lowell Cain appears in the Daily Press declaring July 11 to 17 as Chamber of Commerce Week. The note urges support for the chamber and highlights its nonpolitical, nonsectarian role fostering civic, commercial, agricultural and industrial progress for the community and free enterprise.

Merriman Service Held At Curtis Mortuary Chapel

J D Merriman Jr longtime Silver City resident died June 30 at home. Funeral conducted 3:30 p m Monday by Rev James G Wayne of First Methodist Church. Cremation in Albuquerque. Survivors include widow Helen Le nore, son James D Merriman III, three grandchildren, four sisters, two brothers. Longtime editor and founder of Silver City Credit Bureau active in March of Dimes Boy Scouts and Golden Gloves programs.

C of C Member Drive To Open Here July 11th

The Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce begins a week-long membership drive on July 18 starting with a board breakfast and report at noon. The goal is 200 new members added to about 200 already. A direct mail and personal contact campaign will seek support and dues to fund community aims. The group notes progress on the July 4 celebration and thanks Hugh Hawkins for his work. The chamber remains neutral on a site for a new firehouse, offering mediation for citizen desire to relocate from Gough Park. A property swap list near Gough Park is being considered.

Teamsters Back President’s Legal Fees With Funds

A Miami Beach bulletin reports that the Teamsters Union approved using union funds for nearly 1 million dollars in pending legal bills for their twice-convicted president James E. B. Hotla and authorized treasury payments for any future and past legal expenses.

Council weighs per foot charge for new water sewer lines

Dr. Edgar Kugler of Western New Mexico University and Clark Lynch investor voice concern as 2000 to 3000 feet of pine is to be laid to connect Holiday Inn area water and sewer lines east of Silver City. They fear lines become city property with non payer access. Mayor Cain notes past policy of city paying per home hookup while council studies per foot assessments for abutting property owners. U S Warplanes Face Large North Viet Nam SAM Assault

U S warplanes dodged 27 to 29 Soviet made missiles over North Viet Nam in one of the heaviest raiding days of the war. The missiles were fired from Red River Valley silos 50 to 115 miles north and northwest of Hanoi. Air Force pilots reported wrecking four missile sites and two fuel depots within 33 miles of Hanoi.
