Lawmakers consider separation of environmental agency

Santa Fe Gov. Bruce King asks the Legislature to study and restructure the Environmental Improvement Agency into an independent body. Rep. James Kagh chairs Natural Resources, sponsoring the bill to fund a deep analysis, set up hearings, and report by the 1974 session. The plan envisions moving functions from HSSD and creating a standalone agency with a detailed plan of organization.

Xi Beta Beta Chapter Plans Valentine Dance and Tea

Xi Beta Beta of BSP held its January meeting at Mrs. Lillian Parra home with 15 members. A salad supper preceded proceedings. The club praised Mrs. Laver Shoup for the Welcome Sign project and publicity. A Valentine dance for four Silver City ESP chapters will be Feb 12 at CYU Hall with Bygones performing.

Bill Turner Named President of Pilot's Group

The Grant county Pilot's Association held its annual election at the Silver City Grant County Airport naming Bill Turner president, Frank Ross vice president, Mrs. Bessie Whitley secretary, Ron Whitley treasurer, and Turki Grimes public relations. Afterward members flew to compete for the traveling trophy proficiency award and the spot landing jackpot award with Rot Whitley winning in a Cessna 150.

Shindig By Square Dancers At Snell Junior High

The Swite Thru Square Dance Club hosts a Sunday dance at Snell Junior High in Bayard from 3 to 6 pm. Marshall Flippe of Abilene will call the dances, with dancers expected from El Paso Alamogordo Las Cruces Deming and other New Mexico towns. Spectators are welcome and all square dancers are urged to attend.

Wildlife program educates sixth graders on Gila National Forest

Wesley Martgan's sixth grade class at Stout Intermediate Showl viewed slides and heard a talk about the Gila National Forest wildlife last Friday. The program was led by Joseph Jones, a naturalist with the U.S. Forest Service.

Local Historical Society Meets At Library Tonight

Southwestern New Mexico Historical Society holds its January meeting at 7 30 PM in the Silver City Public Library. Guest speaker Robert L Humphrey of Silver City will discuss old car restoration and display items from his auto collection including a complete set of hand painted New Mexico license plates. He will outline plans to charter a horseless carriage organization in Grant County. All interested persons are invited. a short business meeting precedes.

National Secretaries Association Manana Chapter met at Mrs Pauline Patton's home for January. Mrs Myrtle Pane presided as president. The chapter adopted a resolution praising Western New Mexico University secretarial training. Mrs Angie Garcia outlined the Future Secretaries Association Award program encouraging attendance for a $2,000 scholarship. Shirley Hoagland chaired the program and introduced June Chaplain of Western New Mexico University who led the panel Questions and Answers in the Business World.

IWNMU Grad Retires From Post

Mrs Geneva Back, purchasing agent in the Contracts Division at the Atomic Energy Commission's Albuquerque Operations Office, retires after more than 29 years of federal service. A Capitan New Mexico native and Western New Mexico University alumna, she taught in Grant County, worked at Deming wartime depot, then Los Alamos, and joined Albuquerque AEC in 1947. She earned the High Quality Performance Award in 1967 and 1970. She and her husband Seymour R. will continue living at 1609 Roma Avenue NE Albuquerque.
