Apodaca Seeks Rural Isolation Funding for McKinley Schools

Governor Jerry Apodaca urged lawmakers to add 568000 in state funds to Gallup McKinley County Schools for 1976 77 via a rural isolation factor change. The move faces opposition from the Legislative School Study Committee which argues current funding already covers Gallups needs and shifting would drain other districts. A broad coalition including teachers and officials pressed for the plan noting the district spans five high schools and covers vast geography. The governor plans to introduce a bill to amend the formula and push the rural factor with Harry Wagaker backing the effort. He also cited language about English support and travel challenges for Indian students. The issue was raised at a Santa Fe meeting and during his weekly press conference.
