American Pilot Missing After North Vietnam Airstrikes

A U S bomber was shot down during radar attacks on Yen Bai airfield 73 miles northwest of Hanoi. The missing pilot Thunderrhief was part of a raiding force that downed the plane amid poor weather. U S forces report 36 MIGs downed and 103 Communist jets claimed. Hanoi reported limited missions due to cloud cover. Additional updates describe ambushes near Dak To and Khe Sanh, casualties, and new peace plan proposals involving a coalition government including the Viet Cong.

Tyrone Project Progress Reported by WLW

Copper Strike Enters Seventh Month On Global Standstill

The nationwide copper strike enters its seventh month with negotiations limited to one front. Talks resume January 23 between Anaconda Co and union officials in Butte Montana after a breakdown on October 19. Lost wages through January 7 total $24 million, with Montana economic loss around $51 million. No major talks with Phelps Dodge in Arizona. Douglas talks recessed January 8 to be resumed on call. Kennecott Copper and United Steelworkers continue local talks in Hurley New Mexico with no progress comments. Merchants in Silver City say 1,200 strikers tied up capital in accounts receivable but expect settlement by month’s end. More than 69,000 workers idled since the strike began July 15.

Niece of Mrs. Bell Dies in California Burial in Southgate

Mrs. Hattie Kilburn Hilton, aged 54, died in California and was buried in the family plot at Southgate. Born July 21, 1892 in Silver City she was the eldest child of the Kilburns. Surviving: a son and a daughter in California and a sister Mrs. Bob Kiidure Gilmore of Santa Barbara.

Survived by husband Ambrosio Tena with U.S. Air Force in Thailand, three daughters Adelaida Quesada of El Faso Texas. Dolores and Lydia Tena of Silver City. her parents Ramon and (Mrs.) Borrego of Silver City. two brothers Feliciano and Macario Borrego. five grandchildren.
