Michael J. Quill and eight union leaders were jailed for contempt after defying a court order to end a subway and bus strike in New York. A judge ordered confinement until they restore operations, while Quill posed with a badge and warned the sheriff.
The Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce board met with a quorum and discussed routing business un tying and an upcoming election for board members. They decided to submit by law changes with ballots and invite city officials to present a concrete expenditure program under the new sales tax setup. Several directors urged a positive stand rather than remaining on the fence as citizens seek leadership.
Chicago reports 564 deaths over a 78-hour New Year weekend marking the second holiday peak this year. Christmas weekend reached 720 deaths, with total holiday fatalities at 1,284. NSC notes expected ranges and calls for public concern. state tallies include California 46, Ohio 46, New York 4, Illinois 34, Michigan 30, and no deaths in Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, North Dakota or Rhode Island.
Apolonio M Lominguez 53 lifelong Silver City resident died early today at Hillcrest General Hospital. He previously worked as a smelter employee for the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corp at Hurley and received a disability retirement in 1963. Survived by his widow Josefa Dominguez four stepsons and four stepdaughters and a brother Louis Dominguez of Los Angeles. Arrangements are pending with Curtis Mortuary of Silver City.
Rosary service for Andres Geax Mendoza who died Sunday at his home in Bayard will be held at 7 30 p m today in the chapel at Curtis MurtWy in Silver City The funeral is scheduled for 9 30 a m Wednesday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard with Rev Fr Frank Sierra officiating Burial will be in the Hurley Cemetery
Dick Johnson Gila National Forest supervisor will headline the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Betty Biggs chamber manager says Johnson will discuss the Job Corps program.
State planning officer John W. Wrynn and state official Jack Coogler lead a three county flood damage survey along the Gila and San Francisco rivers aided by Soil Conservation Service staff and a State Highway District Office rep from Deming. They will inspect Grant County sites today and Hidalgo and Catron counties by air tomorrow with Gov. Campbell noting federal agencies have power to declare disaster and funds hinge on damage to public installations, roads and bridges.
Manuel and Mickey Chavez announced the sale of Chavez Cafe at 606 East 15th Street after 19 years in business. The cafe, long praised as one of the better eating places in the area, will transition to Mr. and Mrs. RC Montoya and continue serving parties and the general public with emphasis on quality food, cleanliness and service.
Joe Lardizabal Jr and his wife Mickey escaped serious injury when their car left the road on a curve two miles south of Hurley and turned over. State Patrolman Gene Tow investigated the accident. Mickey Lardizabal was admitted to Hillcrest General Hospital for X rays and treatment of bruises and was released Monday.

In a Tuy Hoa area operation near Saigon, South Korean marines and Vietnamese paratroopers exchanged fire with Viet Cong. Eight guerrillas killed and eight captured as allies pushed the search and destroy mission with artillery support amid light casualties. Tear gas and chemical munitions were used by both sides in coastal clashes. Government outposts held after Viet Cong probes in Bien Hoa Province. Cambodian response warned as Mekong Delta push nears the border.
