Jerry Apodaca was sworn in as New Mexico’s 24th governor in a bareheaded, snowbound ceremony on the capitol grounds. The native-born reformer, 40, pledged to restore public confidence and address perceived government indifference and corruption.
A winter storm blanketed New Mexico starting New Year's Day with snow and icy winds. National Weather Service warnings remained in effect, snow spread statewide, and Cloudcroft reported eight inches with high winds while Mortality and Truth or Consequences logged six inches and Deming two inches.
The New Mexico weather shifts with snow and drifting flurries across the state. In Silver City the high was 41 and low 21, with today’s forecast near 42/14. Governor Apodaca, welcomed amid snow, pledged a bearskin effort to unite the state and serve all people while former governors attended the oath and a New Year Mass was held in Santa Fe.
A U S federal court jury convicted three top Nixon aides John Mitchell H R Haldeman and John Ehrlichman of conspiracy obstruction of justice and perjury. Former Atty Gen Robert Mardian was also convicted of conspiracy. Parkin was acquitted. Sentencing pending. The verdict, read New Year’s Day 1975, capped a major Watergate chapter.
