The funeral service for George Franklin Zumwalt, who died Wednesday in Deming, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. James Trewern officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Deming.
Associated Press writer reports New Mexico public school teachers may strike next week if Gov. Cargo does not call a special legislative session on school financing. The New Mexico Education Association delegates vote for sanctions, including study days, and warn of possible further walkouts if demands are not met.
Silver High School faculty met February 20 in the Little Theater to approve a philosophy guiding the school. The document, prepared by the Philosophy Committee, emphasizes cultural blending, universal opportunity, citizenship, and use of basic skills. Committees will study curricular and cocurricular activities and staff reports will reflect preparation for a North Central Evaluation Committee visit in spring.
Grant County teachers met at 4 p.m. today led by Gabe Anaya to review the New Mexico Education Association strike vote. Silver system instructors urged delegates to avoid a walkout while backing sanctions and censure as a response to educational finance concerns.
AP reports seven month copper industry strike negotiations opened in Salt Lake City between unions led by United Steelworkers and Kennecott Copper Corp. Union leaders signaled openness to realistic single-group bargaining or none, while Arizona independents and Anaconda’s Twin Buttes Mine faced stalled talks. About 500 workers at Twin Buttes have no contract since Oct 15, with mine production planned for 1969. nationwide, the strike idled roughly 60,000 workers since last July.
At the El Paso smelter Ameri can Smelting and Refining Co. says it has shipped at least six car loads of copper concentrate for refining since partial production resumed. Officials declined to specify copper ore quantity. The firm is hiring new workers to replace strikers who have been off the job since mid July as part of the national copper strike. Limited production resumed about two weeks ago.
Princeton New Jersey AP reports that more than half of rank and file Republicans favor Richard Nixon for the 1968 presidential nomination. Nixon led with 51 percent of votes, widening his margin over Nelson Rockefeller by 26 points. Ronald Reagan had eight percent and George Romney seven percent as the field narrowed.
Gov. David Cargo said he wants a copy of the Albuquerque public school teachers' financing plan by Monday. He noted the plan could be considered by the legislature and set a noon deadline. The New Mexico Education Association demanded written notice for a special session to provide more funds.
About 78,000 students in Albuquerque were released from classes as teachers walked out over funding. Governor Cargo urged a plan to boost school spending while Supt. Robert L. Chisholm kept schools open briefly before closing them due to teacher absences, canceling activities including basketball tournament play. A statewide strike possibility hung over the district as the New Mexico Education Association planned further action.
Cobre Education Association president Jane Gray said district teachers were on the job and would not join the Albuquerque strike. A Santa Fe meeting approved a resolution urging the governor to decide on a special session by Feb 26, with sanctions possible if action is taken. The local association plans no action against Superintendent Haskel Smith who helped secure $154,000 for Grant County Schools.
President Johnson asks Congress for a far reaching housing and urban development program to build or rehabilitate nearly 2.5 million housing units in five years and authorize 2.94 billion in contracting authority. The plan includes FHA rate adjustments, a cooperative reinsurer for high risk areas, and tax deferral for insurers participating in high risk city projects. It presents a long range blueprint with modest early outlays.
In Miami Beach Avy Gleason, president of the AFL CIO International Longshoremen's Association, telegrammed copper strike leader Joseph Molony promising to refuse all copper imports and exports in the United States and Canada. The union, which handles East and Gulf coast cargo, cites solidarity with striking copper workers amid past disruptions to shipments and Russian wheat movements.
