Six NM Senate Bills Ready For Vote In Santa Fe

Six major bills were prepared for Senate action in Santa Fe including companion measures to fund the foundation program for public schools with an added 8 million dollars from general funds and a 21 million dollar outlay from the public school fund. Also slated for votes were two pairs of state income tax increases estimated to bring in 5 million and 15 million dollars respectively, plus a bill to establish congressional districts for U.S. representatives. The district plan keeps Bernalillo County in a single district with neighboring counties. House action followed earlier consideration.

Mrs Juanita Alvidrez longtime Grant County resident died this morning at Paradise Valley Hospital in San Diego Funeral arrangements are pending in Los Angeles Her son Ernesto Alvidrez of Bayard and several other children including Elias Cosme Leonides and Julia Alvidrez survive along with 20 grandchildren and one great grandchild

The Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce announced new committee heads for Frontier Days. Curtis Maxwell will head activities, Mrs. Pat Foster handles publicity, Leona Skillman oversees ticket sales, and Lee Vesely was named to head the parade committee.

Increase For County Officers Is Proposed

In Santa Fe a 5 percent salary rise for county officers is proposed by the New Mexico Senate Finance Committee as a substitute bill. The measure would apply to all counties except Los Alamos, which is excluded due to specific funding. The raise targets county commissioners, treasurers, assessors, sheriffs, county clerks, and probate judges.

Bayard Adopts Liquor Rules and City Upgrades

Bayard trustees approved a liquor licensing ordinance setting annual fees of 100 for package stores and 80 for bars and declared it an emergency for economic reasons. The village also boosted the municipal judge salary to 375 and appointed Benjamin R. Gonzales as assistant fire chief. Elect ion clerks and judges were chosen and Bayard will use voting machines for the first time amid ongoing department-building use discussions.

Garbage piles rise as New York strikers surrender

The sanitation union president surrendered for an 11 day jail term amid mounting city garbage on the sixth day. Pedestrians navigate windblown refuse as weather forecasts warn of snow from Thursday afternoon into Friday. Fire department notes fivefold rubbish fires since Sunday and 500 of 10,000 striking members volunteered to haul refuse from hospitals and schools.

State Aid Cut To Public Schools In Grant County

Gov. Cargo says Grant County will lose 147,845 state aid next year due to the Legislature not adopting a foundation plan for education. He blames lawmakers for endorsing the idea yet refusing to enact it, stressing funds must be spent wisely and not raise taxes prematurely.

The Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce invites clubs organizations and individuals to submit nominations for the Outstanding Citizen 1967. Nominations are due by February 16 with a late March or early April banquet date for the award presentation to the recipient who has provided outstanding service in 1957.

W E Riley Dies Monday In Las Cruces

William E. Riley 76 longtime area resident died Monday evening in Las Cruces after a long illness. He owned Santa Rita Motor Company until 1965. Survived by wife Sally, daughter Jean Jefius of Las Cruces, a grandchild, two sisters Ellie Prue and Elizabeth Hill, and brother Pat Riley. Funeral at 2:50 pm Thursday at ham Mortuary Las Cruces, burial Las Cruces Cemetery. Pallbearers listed.
