Manson Charged With More Murders Refuses Lawyer

Charles Manson, arraigned on the ninth murder charge, refused a lawyer saying no one can speak for him. Barefoot in jail denims, Manson appeared with Bruce Davis, charged in the killing of stuntman Donald “Shorty” Shea, who vanished from the Spahn Ranch, headquarters of the Manson clan, in August 1969. Shea’s body was never found and authorities say it was hacked to pieces. The trials include Manson and three women in the Tate murders case, with a rescue date set after a recess for new counsel to catch up on the defense.

Pentagon to destroy all germ warfare stockpiles

Washington AP reports plans by the Pentagon to eliminate all germ warfare stockpiles under strict safety and security. Destruction will occur at sites including Pine Bluff Arkansas Rocky Mountain Arsenal Colorado Fort Detrick Maryland and Beale Air Force Base California with no movement of agents. Federal state and local agencies will review plans before any operation begins to prevent pollution and officials will not disclose quantities or agent identities. Lt Col Gerald G Watson Kilgore Texas said the agents' identities and amounts should remain secure.

Sunday liquor sales fight reaches New Mexico court

The dispute over Sunday liquor service traces to a 1963 law and subsequent rulings. The State Liquor Division bans sales on Sunday, the attorney general permits it, and the state supreme court later voided Sunday sales. David Sierra issued rules allowing service with prepaid purchase and permit applications, affecting Braun and the La Fonda Hotel. The 1971 Legislature opens in January to consider proposed Sunday drinking laws.

Rentzel Indicted by Dallas Grand Jury

Dallas County grand jury indicted NFL player Lance Rentzel of the Cowboys on indecent exposure to a juvenile. Dist Atty Henry Wade said trial likely in February. Rentzel, 27, charged in November over an incident involving a 10 year old girl in University Park. He appeared at University Park police station November 20 and posted a $1300 bond. Rentzel has played for the Cowboys since 1987 and married TV star Josey Heatherton April 12, 1959.

Battle name dispute at Stones River known as Murfreesboro

The Union attacked at the Stones River line but Confederates called the battle Murfreesboro. The clash affected troop movements and morale in the Tennessee theater.

Kennecott Sues Nevada Over Hamog Regulations

Kennecott Copper Corp, a major Nevada employer, files suit in CAHSON City against the State of Nevada to block Hamog regulations enacted Thursday. The complaint argues the rules were adopted with insufficient preparation and are unnecessary, arbitrary, and directed at the industry. A Kennecott spokesman says operations remain unaffected unless enforcement begins, and the suit followed unsuccessful talks with the Board of Health.
