Unofficial reports circulating in Silver City indicate the new Silver High School building may not be ready for occupancy next term. Administrators fear transferring students after the second semester begins, with plans for possible fall use if late completion continues.
Grant County Sheriff Steve Ray Aguirre will depart Silver City this afternoon for a two day New Mexico Sheriff and Police Association conference in Albuquerque. He said the theme is command and supervision and attendees will work on improving public service by law enforcement officers.
Increasing cloudiness today through Tuesday with possible light showers. Precipitation probability 30 percent today and tonight 20 percent Tuesday. Highs near 58 today and 56 Tuesday, lows around 40 tonight and 33 tonight, 7 am high 38, low 33. Airport report shows a high of 40 and low 40.
The Silver City Town Council will meet in regular session at city hall to review current sewer rates. The meeting continues last week’s informal discussions and also seeks bids on new sewer pipe, scrap bridge steel, and a police cruiser to replace an aging unit.
Fred Estrada of Bayard remains in good condition at Hillcrest General Hospital after losing the lower part of his right arm in a New Jersey Zinc blasting accident. Superintendent J L Craig says details await doctors’ permission to interview Estrada and that there were no witnesses to the mishap as he cleared three mist holes where dynamite did not detonate.
Jerry Arvey of Arenas Valley was arraigned in justice court on burglary charges for Jamie's Package Store break in Friday night. Police tied three juveniles to the scene after a broke window and missing merchandise were found Saturday morning. Arvey posted a 1500 dollar bond. juveniles remain in the juvenile probation system.
Doctor Carl Coppolino faces trial in Monmouth County Superior Court for the strangling of Lt. Col. William E. Farber, a former neighbor, as prosecutors seek the death penalty amid allegations of an affair with the slain man’s wife. Defense passed to F Lee Bailey. state prosecutor Vincent Keuper leads the case.
About 150 Masons and spectators attended the dedication and cornerstone laying at Silver High School in Silver City. Masonic Grand Master HO Robertson officiated and explained origins, with a sealed copper box containing local publications, rosters, coins, stamps, and mementos placed in the wall. Col EL Mickelson urged community responsibility as the box is expected to be found when the building wears out in 75 to 100 years.
LAS VEGAS AP The head of the American Farm Bureau Federation asked for an end to government farm controls at the 48th annual meeting. Charles B Shuman said consumer demand is strong and market prices are generally above support levels. He argued government supply management does not work and urged focus on production marketing research and promotion of international trade.
Berkeley California AP Chancellor Roger W Heyne urged students via leaflets to focus on studies as a campus boycott resumes after a Navy recruiting protest turned into a sit-in and arrests. Strike leaders say negotiations are off and promise a student oriented reform plan to be discussed by the Academic Senate.
Fourteen Job Corps trainees from Alpine are due in Silver City for their annual winter session today. A group stayed over the weekend to ready the Job Corps quarters. The trainees lodge at the U S Forest Service quarters on Hudson Street. Rotating groups of 25 worked around Grant County for 10 weeks last winter.
Santa Fe AP reports a grand jury selection begins Tuesday with about one week of juror instruction to follow. Dist Court Judge Samuel Montoya outlined the plan as New Mexico Republicans previously petitioned for the inquiry after a critical Finance Committee report Aug. 4. Dist Atty Alfonso Sanchez said he will submit evidence when the grand jury convenes. He praised State Police and State Auditor Alex Armijo for help and noted the State Board of Finance rejected a request for 10,002 to hire outside experts.
A 21 year old from Belen died in a Sunday two car collision on U S 85 four miles north of Belen. State Police identified the van as driven by Jonny Sanchez who struck the rear of a car driven by Lonnie Peres 20 and Les Lunas.
Western New Mexico University basketball coach Jim Smith will address the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce at the Wednesday noon luncheon. now in his 10th year at Western, he previously coached at Grass Creek High School Indiana and Lordsburg High. Under his guidance Western teams have 102 wins and 150 losses. The chamber gathers weekly at the Milner Highland Hotel in Silver City.
City Manager Richard Cunningham announced the delivery and deployment of a new municipal front-end loader costing about $13,400. The unit replaces a 10 year old machine and will boost efficiency for the street water and sewer maintenance crews in the city.
Salisbury AP report says Prime Minister Ian Smith's cabinet rejected Britain's shipboard agreement on the 13 month old independence crisis. Smith told a crowd outside his offices the fight goes on as the hour neared. Eisenhower to undergo gall bladder surgery at Walter Reed Hospital this week at age 76.
The Lions Club set up a large Christmas tree at Gough Park with about 25 members helping cut haul and decorate. The tree was felled near Signal Peak and transported by Clifton Chevrolet’s wrecker, using a crane owned by C. J. Cobb of Silver City. A buried steel pipe supports the tree and will be reused next year after removal.
U S jets faced Mig 17s and Mig 21s while bombing near Hanoi in a fierce air battle. U S pilots claimed one confirmed kill and another probable as they targeted the Ha Gia oil depot north of Hanoi. The strike followed heavy U S losses two days earlier and amid increased air activity around the North Vietnamese capital.
Dennis Emmet Wadleigh of El Paso was arrested after a collision on Silver Heights Boulevard in Silver City. He pled guilty in justice court to driving while intoxicated leaving the scene and resisting arrest, receiving a $100 fine and license suspension with $50 fines on the other counts.
Silver High School principal C. W. McCrary announced a tin service departmental meeting for junior and senior English teachers today. The session aims to set college admission standards and coordinate teaching with the junior and senior high, with a second English conference to follow midweek for social science, part of a district effort to upgrade curricula.
