Two Miners Trapped In Arizona Cave

Two miners became trapped when a tunnel ceiling collapsed at Hecla mine near Jerome 45 miles south of Phoenix. Rescue teams fought heat and smoke, delivering oxygen and gear as one miner identified as David Deeder of Casa Grande was located. A second man remained unnamed, with others unscathed.

Two Wrongs Do Make A Right

Boston AP reports researchers have devised a method using two wrongs to clarify sight for cataract patients. Filters distort incoming light before it enters the eye so the cataract still distorts it to form a usable image on the retina. The approach, developed by Dr David Miller and Dr George Benedek, has only been tested in the lab and on surgically removed lenses, with clinical use still uncertain.

Local Rep Vega Wins International Sales Award

Scholarship Winner Dela Abalos Heads to Western New Mexico

Dela Abalos an 18 year old graduate of Silver High School has won a scholarship to Western New Mexico University from the American G. I. Forum of New Mexico. Abalos, active as a varsity cheerleader and in GAA, Pep Club, and Chorus, plans to major in Elementary Education and become a teacher. Parents are Mr and Mrs David Abalos of Silver City.

Woman's Clubs Plan Local Convention in Silver City NM

The 4th District New Mexico Federation of Women's Clubs convenes in Silver City to plan the district meeting at the local Woman's Club clubhouse. Mrs. Russell Holmes serves as general co chairwoman with Frances Blair and James Martin handling reservations and registration. District officers from Alamogordo Las Cruces and nearby towns attend the day long session followed by luncheon served by Mrs. Skillman and Mrs. McDonald.

Nixon proclaims April 26 as Women's Equality Day

President Nixon designated April 26 as Women's Equality Day and urged rapid ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. The proclamation, asked by Congress, notes major strides toward economic opportunity for women but says much remains to be done as women, though a majority, still face widespread discrimination.
