Air Quality Improves While Watersheds Deteriorate Nationwide
Washington reports air quality improved nationwide from 1969 to 1970, with emissions lower for carbon monoxide and particulates but higher for nitrogen oxide. Major watersheds show worsened pollution, phosphate and nitrogen increases in urban and rural basins, and runoff from farms and urban areas noted. The 450 page annual review estimates antipollution spending at 287 billion over a decade and rising environmental costs from 10 to 33.3 billion annually by 1980.

Four Dead In Weekend State Traffic Mishaps

Philadelphia report notes that among 3300 white children from Philadelphia New York and Wilmington the lower socioeconomic group shows higher obesity at age six with 29 percent of girls in poverty overweight versus 3 percent in the upper group. By age twelve gaps narrow to 13 percent versus 9 percent. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania cite social pressure on women as a factor.
