Upward Bound Program Concludes At Western
Western New Mexico University wraps up its first Upward Bound Pilot with an awards banquet attended by eighty students, counselors, and parents. Thirty four area students earned completion certificates, with Rosemary Almanza and Joe Garcia receiving the top scholarships for progress. Awards honored Arts and Crafts Eloise Antonio and Joey Padilla. Mr. and Miss Personality La Trest Edwards and Joey Padilla. Basketball two on two Terrell Chino and Curt Russell. Dr. Gilbert Calkins spoke as guest, praising gains in reading speed and comprehension and university atmosphere. Project Coordinator James Henry attributed success to peer counselors and active participation, with planned fall sessions on communication, art, culture, trips, and guest speakers from WNMU.

Carrasco blasts authorities for poker playing tactics
Fred Gomez Carrasco an armed convict who seized the Texas State Prison library on July 24 challenged authorities accusing them of “playing a game of poker” with the hostages lives. He demanded an armored truck with a phone and shortwave radio and would release nine hostages after forming a human shield behind which he and four others would board the vehicle. Estelle agreed to provide the armored vehicle only after all hostages are released. The prison department imposed a news blackout as negotiations continued.

Mills Campaign Got 100000 From Dallas Firm Officials
