Garth Jones reports the Texas University shooting where Charles Joseph Whitman killed 16 people and wounded 31 before dying at the sniper’s perch. The tragedy began with killings of his wife and mother and unfolded on the campus as police and witnesses describe the hours of terror.
The Silver City Town Council hired Chamber & Campbell to develop a comprehensive urban plan for the area. The federal government will fund two thirds of the estimated $6 112 project cost, with the town paying the remainder over 18 months. Other firms considered were Kenneth Lawson and Associates and Rowland and Associates. Chamber & Campbell already serve as architects for the Fine Arts Center and the Western New Mexico University dorms.
A New York AP report notes the Austin sniper's 13 killings in 13 minutes on a Camden street in 1949 and cites Unruh’s mental fitness verdict. It places the event among America’s most deadly mass murders with comparisons to Starkweather and Speck cases.
Tony M. Lopez 20, shipping clerk at Olympia Screw and Die Works Downey California, died from injuries in a motorcycle crash last Saturday July 30. He was a Cobre High School graduate and son of Elias Nuanes Central with brothers Leo Hurley and Paul Nuanes Central, sister Rita Nuanes Central, and grandmother Lupe Rodriguez Hurley. Rosary service July 31 at Curtis Mortuary Silver City with funeral Mass August 1 Infant Jesus Hurley. burial in Hurley Cemetery. Pallbearers named.

Annelie Tidwell 26 of Morenci Arizona sister of Helen Brown of Silver City died July 25 after a long illness in Morenci Hospital. Services were at First Presbyterian Church Morenci with Rev Ron Roberts officiating. Interment Rest Haven Memorial Gardens Safford. Survived by parents W G Harrison, two sisters Janis Haymes Alamogordo and Helen Brown, former husband Don Tidwell, and four nephews.
The Silver City Kiwanis Club plans a Pancake Day at Ray's Cafe in downtown Silver City on Wednesday from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door.
The Silver City chamber of commerce reports a free barbecue fund for delegates to the New Mexico School Bus Drivers Institute and their families should be fully funded by Wednesday’s weekly luncheon. A city council survey on zonal planning was contracted to an Albuquerque firm, with a representative to address a future luncheon. The Jaycees’ November community survey results will be released after inspection tonight, with praise for public service and notes on resolving past complaints.
The Rev Harold E Johnson longtime Valley Community Church pastor died at noon today in Hillcrest General Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was named Grant Countian of the Year and honored at a 1960 Chamber of Commerce banquet. Private funeral services are planned and the family requests contributions to Valley Community Church in his memory.
Dr Joseph Intorre executive secretary Motor Fleet Training Institute of Public Safety Pennsylvania State University will speak at the Silver City Grant County Chamber luncheon at the Milner Murray Hotel. He appears as consultant for the New Mexico School Drivers Institute at Western New Mexico University with Gayland Wallin chamber president chairing and Bill Lemon NM Education director present. Over 650 bus drivers had registered for the institute by late morning per Betty Biggs.
