Picket Lines Halt Work At Local Telephone Co

The AFL CIO Communications Workers strike hits 90 percent effectiveness nationwide while Bell System service remains near normal. Cables cut disrupt some areas including an FAA control center in Oberlin Ohio.

Sheriff and Deputy Named in Replevin Suit

The Grant County Sheriff Steve Ray Aguirre and Chief Deputy George Harela were named defendants in a Sandoval County suit filed by First State Bank of Cuba Corrales Branch. The bank seeks $500 for failing to serve papers on Felipe Gonzales, who is elusive. The bank states officials did not respond to inquiries and on April 1 did not forward the proper papers.

Strike Hits Mountain States Telephone Across New Mexico

In New Mexico supervisory staff manned switchboards during a national AFL C IO strike. About 1000 Mountain States Telephone employees in New Mexico and an estimated 300 in El Paso Texas walked out. Albuquerque Los Alamos Santa Fe Clovis Roswell Alamogordo Las Cruces Tem ng Gallup and El Paso offices were affected. Santa Fe saw six central office repairmen on picket lines and 75 operators mostly in the Communications Workers union honoring them. Long distance service disruption was anticipated. Some Gallup area Indian communities lack direct dialing.

NLRB Hearings Set On Phelps Dodge Tyrone Unit

Larry Porterfield of the NLRB said a petition filed April 10 by United Steelworkers Teamsters Local 390 and Local 953 and Operating Engineers seeks an NLRB election at the Phelps Dodge Tyrone operation south of Silver City. The hearing is set for April 29 in Grant County Court House with IAM and later IBEW petitions to be consolidated.

Jury Trial Ordered For Gillihan In Grant County Killing

A jury trial is set for Sept 25 for Riley Gillihan alias Riley Coots charged with four murders near Santa Rita on the Georgetown Road March 30. Gillihan pleads not guilty at arraignment before District Judge Norman Hodges. Attorneys J Wayne Woodbury and Hulton Dicksin seek independent psychiatric examination. Gillihan is held in Grant County Jail without bond. Victims named are David Rodriguez 25 Andrea Rodriguez 55 Maria Rodriguez 44 Moises Rodriguez 45.

Pennington Sister Dies at Ranch Home in KM

Mrs Forester Pennington learned of her sister Mrs Henry Andrews 64 who died suddenly this morning at her ranch near Prewett KM. Funeral arrangements are pending with tentative plans for Silver City.
