The Liver City-Grant County Chamber of Commerce board will meet at 7 a.m. Tuesday in the Drifter Restaurant downstairs. President Kent Roberts reports a financial statement will be presented. Weather outlook shows cloudy and warm through Tuesday with highs near 73 to 76 and lows around 39 to 46.
Rudolph F. Otero, Espanola, chief of staff of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will be guest speaker at the third annual Loyalty Day ceremony in Bayard. The event includes a Loyalty Day parade at 2 pm April 29, followed by a high school stadium speech, queen crowning, and a reception with buffet dinner for veterans and spouses. Otero, born November 5, 1920 in San Rafael, NM, is a longtime New Mexico resident with extensive VFW leadership roles and multiple veteran organization memberships.
A regional meeting of the New Mexico Municipal League will convene Tuesday evening at 6230 at the Holiday Inn in Silver City. The program features Don Rider, executive director of the state wide organization, and area registrars are expected. Richard Cunningham, Silver City city manager, said about 49 town and city officials and guests are expected at the meeting.
Four escapees from a Wilkinson County public works camp walked through a crowd of 4,000 to meet Governor Maddox at the Georgia open house. They claimed threats of solitary confinement and only one meal, saying they planned to escape two weeks ago to surrender to the governor.
Nationwide protests concluded with disputes over crowd size and impact. Secretary Rusk warned antiwar marches may prolong the Vietnam War while Martin Luther King Jr challenged police tallies and rejected claims of Communist influence, calling the demonstrations patriotic. King criticized FBI scrutiny reports as unnecessary and stressed liberals oppose war without endorsing communism. In Saigon, ex-Vice President Nixon doubted King’s stance and warned the protests could undermine U.S. policy.

Tom J. Korber of Chicago superintendent of construction for the National Tron Company builders of the hoist in the pit at the Chico Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation suffered a fatal heart attack April 9. Korber and his widow Mrs. Marie Korber resided here in 1961 and 1962. He is survived by a brother William of Connecticut. Funeral services were held in Chicago.
Sgt. Maj. Anthony T. Ferrelli of Aurora Illinois doubts his courage justifying the Silver Star awarded for acts during Zone George war fighting. He mailed the medal to Lt. Col. Paul Gorman and flew home after 23 years service ending early for his ill son. Gorman and other officers defend the award noting Ferrelli’s leadership and bravery under Viet Cong attack. The medal will stay on his record, but Gorman plans to send it back.
The Avco Lycoming plant in Stratford Connecticut faced a one day strike by AFL CIO United Auto Workers Local 1010 over wages cost of living and pensions. Johnson directed Justice to seek an 80 day Taft Hartley cooling off period while 80 percent of the plant’s workers picketed without incidents.
Roswell, AP. Four gigantic balloons will be launched this summer from Walker Air Force Base to test parachute designs for a future unmanned Mars landing in the 1970s. Each balloon stands 815 feet tall with 26 million cubic feet capacity and will drift to 130,000 feet over White Sands Missile Range before releasing payloads and firing rockets to simulate Mars entry dynamics.
A 5000 word message issued by Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Africa Asia and Latin America urges world revolution against imperialism with the United States as the main target. Guevara last appeared publicly March 14 1965 and is described as in another country on a mission. The booklet shows recent photographs, some bearded, some not, and Castro says Guevara is alive and elsewhere.
In Naples Florida AP report, Dr Carl Coppolino’s defense moves to strike testimony of two medical experts who linked his wife Carmela Coppolino’s death to a toxic drug. They challenge Dr Milton Helpern’s conclusion and Umberger’s experiments as admissible evidence.
