Local Cancer Society Drive Opens In Grant County

Local volunteers hold a kickoff breakfast at the Drifter Inn for the Grant County American Cancer Society Drive. Beth Turner leads the house to house campaign with bank headquarters in Silver City and Bayard. The effort includes Rainbow Girls and LULACS volunteers and an airplane ride fundraiser with two cents per pound. A hangar dance and future ride dates are planned.

Runyon Killed in 52 Foot Washington Plunge

Washington AP Dyn Runyon Jr son of famous newspaper fan and author and a reporter himself was killed in a 52 foot plunge from F Street Bridge. Runyon 50 died at a hospital after the fall Sunday. He began with the International News Service 32 years ago and later joined the Washington Examiner a former feature writer. Survivors include a wife and three children all of Cincinnati Ohio.

Boarding house owner identifies suspect in King slaying

Birmingham boarding house owner Peter Cherpas reports a roomer named Eric Gait as the man sought in the King assassination. Cherpas, 72, runs a South Side lodging and spoke after being asked to release from a secrecy pledge.

Tax Deadline Nears Amid War-Era Extensions

The 1967 income tax deadline falls at midnight with 18 million Americans having delayed until the final days. Extensions are allowed for victims of last week’s violence including police and National Guardsmen. late filings must be explained and will avoid penalties though interest accrues. IRS estimates 5.2 million returns today, with 60 million by midnight and a record 73.2 million by June.

Courts Busy With Riot Cases Across Major Cities

The Associated Press reports courts are processing thousands arrested for looting arson and violence after riots. Baltimore saw about 5800 arrests with 3 465 tried and 2193 convictions mostly for curfew violations. Washington 5500 arrests. Chicago 2806 with 509 in jail. Cincinnati 260 arrests. New York City about 400. Kansas City 160 in jail with bonds set.

Mrs. King said it is God's will that the work of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. continue. She spoke from his Ebenezer Baptist Church pulpit after Easter services, urging dedication to his unfinished work as the greatest tribute to her husband.

A stove fire at the Silver Bowling Lanes was extinguished by the Silver City Fire Department at 10 21 a m Saturday. Minor burner damage reported. One pumper dispatched. Alarm noted as the 22nd response by the department in 1968 and the fourth in April.

William F Howey 93 longtime Silver City resident dies Saturday morning at Ft Bayard Hospital. A St Joseph Missouri native, he came to New Mexico in 1883 and worked in cattle and mining owning substantial area properties. Surviving nieces and nephews include Alice Norris Edith Pierson Irene Dolin Stella Rathski Laura Doyel Earl Grabe and Herbert Langenfelt. Funeral arrangements are pending Curtis Mortuary.

Pascoe Graveside Service Held This Afternoon

Graveside services directed by Curtis Mortuary were set for Frank Pascoe at 3 p.m. in Memory Lane Cemetery with Rev. Jim Lawless of First Baptist Church of Central officiating. Missing plane search uncovers two bodies in New Mexico canyon

Las Vegas AP report says ground teams found a Santa Fe man and an Albuquerque woman, the pilot Al Baldwin and CAP Capt Dorothy M. Carter, aboard the missing Cessna 180. Glider pilot Thomas Brandes escaped, search efforts by four aircraft and ground parties continue in rugged Sapello Canyon.
