Jane Ryan Jr., manager of the Murray Hotel, was named president of the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce at a board meeting Monday. The Langstroth legacy funded local libraries with gifts, while Hamilton Foundation bought volumes for the Public Library at wholesale prices.

Recommendations for improving streets and utilities in Silver City will be presented Wednesday April 14 at 7 30 p m in the Public Safety Building on Hudson Street. Mrs Ken Wilson and Fred Behrend will lead with slides from the Silver City Master Plan and local study groups. Dale Readel environmentalist with the New Mexico Health Department will discuss environmental health priorities and seek attendee reaction to placement of problems by importance and need for action.
Christine Ortiz a sixth grader from Ernest Portillors class at Bayard Elementary won the Cobre Consolidated School District spelling contest on Wednesday. She spelled a difficult word to win and will compete May 14 15 in El Paso Texas for the Herald Post Southwestern Championship Spelling Bee with prizes totaling 50 25 and 10 for top finishes. Elaine Hornbaker Tina Kirker Barbara Garrela and Adolfo Maestas placed second through fifth.
Snell Junior High students achieved top ratings at a solo and ensemble festival at Zia Junior High in Las Cruces. Fourteen chorus members and 17 band students earned multiple firsts and a few seconds under directors Ralph Saenz and Jack Rein.
