Cement Finishers End Strike with Three-Year Pact
Bargainers report a new three-year contract reached between Plasterers and Cement Masons Local 254 and New Mexico Building Branch Associated General Contractors ending a week-long strike. Union members voted 45 yes to 32 no to ratify. Finishers expected back on the job today after day-long talks.

Mediation leads to staged contract raises for workers
Henry P. Meywes and U S Mediation and Conciliation Service helped reach a contract granting 60 cent an hour raise retroactive to April 1 and 40 cents more on October 1. For 1974 and 1975 the agreement offers 40 cent and 50 cent raises respectively. The union sought a one year term with a $1 wage increase while contractors favored three years. A non affiliated general contractor filed suit in U S District Court claiming the union conducted informational pickets at the American Bank of Commerce site and that no union members or workers with those skills were employed there.

Israel elects Katzir as first contested president
Dr Ephraim Katzir, a leading biophysicist, is named Israel's fourth president in the first contested election. He will be sworn in May 23 for a five year term, succeeding Zalman Shazar. Katzir, linked to Labor, beat Ephraim Urbach of National Religious party 41 to 9 with nine blank ballots. The government plans a complete laboratory at the presidential mansion so Katzir can continue scientific work.
