Communists Fire On Peacekeeping Helos in Mekong Delta
Communist forces shot at two peacekeeping helicopters in the Mekong Delta as Canada weighs withdrawing observer teams. One South Vietnamese helicopter carrying Joint Military Commission members landed at Vi Thanh with no injuries. An ICCH helicopter near Can Tho was not hit. Nine killed when an Air America helicopter for the IC was shot down in Communist territory, including American pilots and crew, a Canadian, an Indonesian, a Hungarian, and two Viet Cong officers. Canada mulls retreat. Trudeau says no quit. Viet Cong express regret but say helicopters strayed from planned path. Saigon accuses communists of ceasefire violations.
