Hugh Hawkins Named Grant County Citizen of the Year
Hugh Hawkins receives Grant County Citizen of the Year at the annual chamber banquet after nominations from six organizations. He heads Veterans of Foreign Wars activities, leads the July Fourth celebration, serves on church boards, aids youth groups, supports Sixteen charities, and helps organize community counseling. The St Vincent Guild lauds his unflagging service as Kent Roberts presents the award. Hawkins is the ninth recipient following a line of notable predecessors.

Satellite Put In Wrong Orbit
A $9 million ATS satellite launched from Cape Kennedy on an Atlas Agena rocket fell into a misfired orbit after a valve failed to close. The 815 pound craft deployed 251 foot stabilization booms but remained in an elongated path, hampering two weather and communications experiments and a space radiator test aboard the Agena upper stage. The mission was compromised by the improper circular orbit.

Four Day Traffic Study Planned In Silver City Area
The State Highway Department will conduct a four day traffic survey in Silver City starting Monday. Six interview stations on NM 80 US 180 and NM 28 will collect origins destinations and trip purposes from drivers for about two minutes each. The study also uses manual and automatic counts to gauge traffic flow and vehicle miles, with J M Moore directing field operations and West New Mexico University aiding interviewing.

D A Seeks Return of Sudderth Salary Since 65
Santa Fe D A Alonso Sanchez asks the Highway Commission chair to return salary paid since 1965 claiming unconstitutionality. Judge James Scarborough issued a temporary injunction blocking payments and Sudderth must show cause April 13. The suit seeks $15,000 yearly salary plus mileage and per diem totaling $3,703.51 since July 1, 1965.
