New Mexico Signs Sexual Crimes Act and Budget Bills
Gov. Jerry Apodaca signed the Sexual Crimes Act redefining rape as criminal sexual conduct and extending it to male victims. The measure includes private hearings on past sexual conduct as admissible evidence. The same day he approved capital outlay bills funding a children’s psychiatric unit in Albuquerque in collaboration with UNM Medical School, plus multiple state projects and a utility tunnel, armory repairs, remodeling, and renovations across several facilities.

Serna to Perform in Cruces at Stage Band Festival
Richard Serna, a Silver High senior, earned a lead-alto saxophone and flute spot in the All-State Jazz Band and will perform at New Mexico State University on Saturday April 5 during the Stage Band Festival. He competes with top NM high school musicians under director Roger Pebworth. Serna also plays in Silver High ensembles and is the son of Mr and Mrs E C Serna of Silver City.

Navy Evacuation Underway From Phang Ran Area
A U S Navy task force evacuated Vietnamese refugees from the Phang Ran area 160 miles northeast of Saigon. The ships Durham and Dubuque carried 700 Marines to maintain order as the Durhams load surpassed 1,400 evacuees and the Dubuque took about 80 aboard by dusk Thursday. Women and children formed the majority, with a few unarmed soldiers among the men.
