Ruins Under Road Path Near Gila Cliff Dwellings
Three ancient sites along a planned highway near the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument are being excavated under archaeologists from the Museum of New Mexico. The T. J. site, a Georgetown Phase Pithouse Village, and a Manlius site date to 1090 and 450 A.D. The work, funded by the U.S. Forest Service and New Mexico highway department, began in March and will run through May as crews document kiva rooms and overlie ranch house remains.
