Kennecott Ends 260 Day Copper Strike With Ratification

United Steelworkers Local 390 ratified the tentative agreement at about 3 40 p m uniting Santa Rita Hurley and nearby plants The vote followed talks in Hurley and Salt Lake City with Gov David Cargo congratulating on the telephoned pledge The settlement brings back 90 to 95 percent of the workforce and the plant moves toward budget production with furnaces returning to operating temperatures and wage raises up to 54 cents per hour plus improved insurance plans The steelworkers and other unions had pursued industry wide bargaining while Kennecott sought local terms only See COPPER on Page 8

Four Killed In Mass Slaying Near Silver City

Four bodies, including two sisters Andrea Rodriguez 55 and Maria Rodriguez 44 and David Rodriguez 22, plus Moises Rodriguez 45, were found shot on George town Road about 20 miles from Silver City. Riley Gillihan 47, also known as Riley Coots, was arrested after a crash at Emory Pass. Autopsy pending, trial set, investigation continues.
