Union demands include double time for overtime, raises of 12.5 to 26 cents over three years, a shorter work week, an eighth holiday, better pensions and extended unemployment benefits. Industry counters with about 26 cents an hour raise over three years and no early retirement.
Westfall, an El Paso officer since 1958, arrived in El Paso to claim a suitcase and was arrested there. In Albuquerque a bank robber demanded money with a pistol, forcing tellers to fill a sack. he fled and was not apprehended. FBI said Westfall will be arraigned in El Paso.
The 1964 mining report shows ongoing copper sinking and new processing facilities in the Carlsbad area with Kermac Potash. It notes $24,664,663 invested in equipment, 10,080 miners employed, perlite valued at $1,879,222 led the nation, nine mining deaths, and state totals by resource across Grant, McKinley, Valencia, Eddy, Lea, Colfax, Bernalillo, Dona Ana, Santa Fe and Guadalupes.
The report recalls Birmingham’s first actual bombing since September 24, 1963, when a shrapnel explosive hurled bolts and metal fragments across a quiet Negro neighborhood. A few days earlier four Black children were killed at the 16th Street Baptist Church Sunday School, with two other Black residents dying in the violence.
Mrs. W. D. Stilley of Atoka Oklahoma was honored Tuesday by her daughter Mrs. H R Wells at the Wells residence. Guests from the Friendship Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church attended. Granddaughter Mrs. Jack Kennedy and Mrs L E Butler assisted with refreshments and ceremonies. A Denver brought birthday cake in corset form featured the caption Pull Yourself Together for Your 89th Birthday.
Miss Lura Bennett of the State Department of Education visited Cobre High School C C Snell Junior High and San Lorenzo elementary schools. She commended the grade 7 12 mathematics program for multi level pacing and interflow, noted teacher direction, praised San Lorenzo teachers for solid instruction and pupil understanding, and highlighted good conduct hot lunch supervision and clean facilities.
John Holguin a 13 year old eighth grader at St Mary Academy spoke at the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce luncheon in the Milner Murray Hotel repeating his prize winning oration Optimism Spirit of Youth He outlined challenges like poverty dropouts and unemployment and urged love understanding and education as solutions He will compete in Deming in three weeks with regional and state contests to follow and a national event in New Orleans in June Also Betty Biggs reported on discussions about government hospital buildings at Ft Bayard and a curious note mentions 13600 buttons on a Francis I costume
