Fire Ants Ride Southeast Texas Nuisance Wave
The imported fire ant infests about 9 million acres in Texas, mainly Southeast, with 20 counties affected and projections of 40 percent statewide by 1970. Native to South America, the ants form large mounds, sting on disturbance, and disrupt crops and livestock. Mirex bait offers strong control, but area-wide treatment is needed to stop spread, as officials seek a state-wide program with an 18 member committee for Southeast Texas. Aerial controls have begun near Dallas and San Antonio.
