Careful Cutting Can Raise Timber Returns
A Forest Service study of 10 logging operations in Southern Illinois shows that proper planning and cut variation can raise value and volume. Black oak logs could yield 34 percent high quality versus 23 percent by workers, with potential board-foot gains of 4.15 times. Timber worth about $4,100 could reach $4,600 with quality-focused cutting, suggesting higher pay for higher grade logs.
