East Texas mounds spur Forest Service park plan near Hemphill
The Sabine National Forest area known as the potato hills near Hemphill is eyed for a new park of several hundred acres to attract visitors to the Toledo Bend Reservoir project. Forest supervisor Jack McElroy notes the site hosts diverse flora and questions about burial artifacts. A separate Carthage project will turn a 74 year old town jail into a museum after a long lease, with restoration to display pioneer relics. Another feature marks Texas first Presbyterian church site near San Augustine, preserved by a log cabin replica and stone monument on a farm road west of town.
