Turpentine Pioneers of East Texas Remembered in Forest Camp Tale
Early 20th century Temple-Eastex crews in Pineland extracted oleoresins from long leaf pines to distill turpentine. Chippers and still hands scraped the trees, loaded resin into barrels, and supplied materials for oils, soaps, and varnishes. Former workers recount tough camps, black labor, and the now vanished plantations preceding Evadale pulp mill recovery.
