Wind Blown Fire Destroys Negro C.M.E. Church
Silsbee volunteer firefighters battled a wind driven blaze Tuesday afternoon at the Negro C.M.E. church on North First Street. High March winds from the south fed the flames, destroying the frame church after nearly an hour of effort. Sparks set a nearby house on Kirby switch tracks, but a garden hose prevented major damage there. Rev. Eddie Joyce, pastor of a Negro church in Orange, lived in the burning house but was away at the time. Fire Chief John Rush led the response with three trucks and about 14 volunteers.
