Biologist Dan Lay of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department notes deer require a varied diet beyond green browse. Acorns fruits forbs mushrooms and grasses make up key foods with no worthless hardwoods. A 100 pound deer needs about 2.5 pounds of dry forage daily, and East Texas forests often lack enough palatable browse. mixed-age hardwood forests offer greater food variety.
