A Tax Foundation study shows Hardin County contributes about 3.7 million dollars in taxes for federal aid while receiving roughly 3.61 million in grants. Nationwide, 21 states pay more in taxes than they get back, while 29 benefit more from grants. The report notes 29 billion in aid distributed versus 23.5 billion in 1970. Local Group Buys Silsbee Cablevision System
On May 30 five Silsbee men purchased the local cablevision system from Stromberg Carlson Credit Corp for 125000 dollars. The new firm, Silsbee Cablevision Inc, will be led by Clifton Caraway as president with Richard Sides as technical manager and a local sales and management group. The 32 mile system serves about 1600 homes with 10 channels including Beaumont and Lake Charles stations, plus Houston and local channels. Antennas will be upgraded on channels 2 11 and 13 to improve reception. Plans call for expansion toward North Silsbee and Lumberton.

Funeral services for Orville Hutt Hoffman 58 of Vidor and formerly of Silsbee were held Thursday at 2:00 pm. by Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor with burial in Knupple Cemetery in Silsbee. Hoffman was found dead about 2:30 pm Tuesday and had likely been dead 20 to 24 hours. He was a self employed lawn mower mechanic who once operated a service station in Silsbee. Survivors include one brother and three sisters.

Bryant W. Bowles Jr. inmate No. 151855 sues Hardin County District Attorney R. Stanley Coe for 20000 claiming false statements to the Texas Department of Corrections. Thompson Loses Bid to Force Vote Machines in Primary
District Judge H A Coe Sr dismissed a bid by Houston Thompson and R C Williams to require voting machines in the June 3 Democratic runoff. They appealed to the Ninth Court of Civil Appeals in Beaufort after the 88th District Court ruling. The judge based his decision on statutes allowing voting machines only in biennial general elections.

Funeral services for 86 year old Dr. J R Fowler of 835 Oriole Beaumont were held at 4 p m Wednesday at Farmer Funeral Chapel in Silsbee with Dr John Wesley Hardt officiating. Burial followed in Resthaven Cemetery. He died Monday at 8 45 p m at Schlesinger Geriatric Center in Beaumont after a brief illness. He practiced as a family physician in Silsbee for 20 years and earlier with Kirby Lumber in Bessmay and Silsbee. Survivors include two sons four daughters a brother two sisters and several relatives. pallbearers were Cecil Cobble J C Jeffrey Jr Robert Nevland Homer Holland Eddie Plunk H N Hopkins R L Read and Bert K Wallace.
