Silsbee volunteers endure two busy days for fires
Silsbee volunteer firemen answered nine alarms in a two day span with eight grass and woods fires and a house fire at 175 Ave C. The home of Clyde and Mrs Sherrod suffered minor damage when a curtain blew into a gas heater. Four Monday grass fires were blamed on burning trash. Tuesday brought four more grass fires, three outside the city. A Willis Road blaze involved both town and Texas Forest Service crews with about three acres burned. Incendiary origins were suspected for several fires, including two large tracts north of town. Local FFA volunteers aided efforts along with nearby districts. By Sunday noon two more grass fires and an oil tank fire near Clair storage were reported. By noon Wednesday five more grass fires and the oil tank blaze prompted foam suppression. Fire Chief John Busby urged caution with open heaters and to stop trash burning during high fire danger.
