A Call for Second Careers in Later Life
The piece argues against mandatory retirement at 65 and urges a societal shift to further careers for older adults. It envisions more flexible jobs, government and corporate counseling, and broader use of volunteers to keep productive, connected, and financially supported as people age.

Fire ants boost cotton yields by preying on pests
Entomologist Dr. Winfield Sterling reports red imported fire ants kill up to 85 percent of young boll weevils and average 66 percent weekly. Fire ants and other predators eat 93 percent of bollworm eggs, enabling higher yields when insecticides are not used. In dryland fields with no insecticides 1810 pounds of seed cotton were produced versus 577 pounds in treated adjacent fields. Sterling argues for integrating fire ants into pest management to reduce insecticide use and costs.
