Restoration work begins on Kirby chapel near Chester
A committee of Tyler County leaders led by former Gov. Allen Shivers starts fundraising to repair and reopen a dilapidated brick chapel and schoolhouse built in 1912 by timber magnate John Henry Kirby near Chester. The site, once a school church and meeting hall, sits beside Farm Road 2097 and aims to become a historical tourist attraction. Nearby, the old John T. Kirby memorial chapel at Peach Tree and a separate historic door from Gov. George T. Wood’s house—now in a court house museum at Col dspring—are noted as local heritage remnants.
