Proposed Estate Tax Changes Benefit Survivors
Washington senator Lloyd Bentsen pushes with the Senate Finance Committee for estate tax reforms to raise the exemption from 60 000 to 200 000 and set a 50 000 credit by 1951. He argues the current rules force farm families to sell land to pay taxes and cites a farmer with 320 060 estate value needing to liquidate to cover taxes. The bill also targets inflated land valuations by stopping land from being taxed at commercial value for estate purposes.

Was Santa Anna U S Citizen New Book Explores Possibility
A forthcoming Shoal Creek Publishers book by Martha Anne Turner questions whether Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was born in Kentucky and may have attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. The volume traces a family legend linking Nathaniel Saunders of Virginia and a Kentucky-born mother to Santa Anna, recounting a path from West Point to Mexico and later leadership as El Presidente. The tale ties to sources including Irvin S. Cobb and Louisville papers, and notes Santa Anna’s ties to Kentucky lore and the Battle of San Jacinto.
